James Bindenagel is a U.S. Ambassador (ret.), whose 30-year Foreign Service career included assignments in West, East, and united Germany. He is currently a Senior Professor at the Center for Advanced Security, Strategy, and Integration Studies at Bonn University.

Prof. Bindenagel’s research focus is on strategic thinking and planning in Germany and transatlantic relations. His recent articles include comments in a Transatlantic Take on the Biden Administration, and on Nord Stream 2 and the AUKUS Deal. In 2020, he authored a book on strategic foresight for Germany entitled Germany From Peace to Power? Can Germany Lead in Europe without Dominating?
