German Presidential Advisor Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff Joins GMF

WASHINGTON – The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is pleased to announce that Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff will join GMF as vice president and executive director of GMF’s Berlin Office and Director of GMF’s Europe Program.

Since 2013, Kleine-Brockhoff has served as head of Policy Planning and Speechwriting in the Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany. In this role he acts as a principal advisor to President Joachim Gauck.

Prior to this role, Kleine-Brockhoff was a member of GMF’s staff in Washington, DC from 2007 to 2013, serving first as senior director for Policy Programs and later as senior fellow and senior director for strategy. In the latter role, he led GMF’s EuroFuture project.

“We are thrilled that Thomas is rejoining GMF,” said GMF President Karen Donfried, “His wealth of experience, depth of perspective, and rich networks in Washington, Berlin and across Europe make him a tremendous asset to our efforts to promote transatlantic cooperation.”

In his new position at GMF, Kleine-Brockhoff will lead the organization’s activities in Germany and set the research direction for the Europe Program. With staff based across Europe and the United States, the group will offer policy analysis designed to contribute to the debate about the future role of Germany and Europe in a rules-based and liberal international order.

As part of the GMF’s executive team, Kleine-Brockhoff will help set the organization's strategic direction.

Kleine-Brockhoff spent almost two decades as a journalist for Germany's renowned weekly Die Zeit and continues to be a sought-after commentator on world events, providing analysis and opinion pieces to the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Süddeutsche Zeitung, among other outlets. Kleine-Brockhoff has degrees from the University of Freiburg and Georgetown University, and has served as a visiting fellow at Harvard University’s Center for European Studies.

Kleine-Brockhoff will begin his role at GMF in March 2017.
