GMF’s Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor for Security and Defense Policy, Derek Chollet, testified in front of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs for the 70th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Chollet outlined the challenges at home and abroad to the transatlantic community under the Trump administration, including threats from rival powers, emerging cyber and hybrid threats, vulnerabilities of NATO’s southern flank, and discord amongst the Alliance. Chollet, however, argued how NATO’s renewed energy through military capabilities, dedication to transatlantic principles, and commitment to common security challenges reflects the bonds that are strengthening the transatlantic community. Chollet maintained that we must remember history to recapture the spirit that first energized U.S. leadership in NATO. His testimony emphasized that the oversight role of Congress remains essential to defending American leadership in the Alliance and the values of the transatlantic community.
