President Biden announced today his intent to nominate Dr. Karen Donfried, president of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, as assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs.  GMF congratulates Dr. Donfried, who has served as GMF’s president since April 2014, when she stepped down as senior director for European Affairs on the National Security Council.  Dr. Donfried will remain in her position at GMF as the Senate considers her nomination.

A number of GMF experts have assumed high-level roles in the Biden administration in recent months, including Derek Chollet, who now serves as counselor to the State Department, Laura Rosenberger who now serves as senior director for China on the National Security Council, and Julianne Smith who is currently senior advisor to the secretary of state.
