  • Lieutenant General (Retired) Hodges holds the Pershing Chair in Strategic Studies at the Center for European Policy Analysis. He graduated from the United States Military Academy. During his military career, he was deputy chief of legislative liaison at the Office of the Secretary of the Army, director of operations of regional command south in Afghanistan, director of the Pakistan Afghanistan Coordination Cell at the Joint Staff and commander of Allied Land Command. General Ben Hodges became commander of United States Army Europe in November 2014, holding that position for three years until retiring from the army in 2017.

  • Roland Paris is professor of international affairs in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa, associate fellow of the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), and former senior advisor to the prime minister of Canada on global affairs and defense.

The discussion will address the future of transatlantic cooperation, from a military aspect with NATO and from a diplomatic understanding in foreign policy. It will include an analysis of the U.S. military’s coronavirus threat anticipation strategy and its perception and interpretation by its allies in Europe and Canada. Discussants will also touch on the impact of the crisis on the U.S. presidential election in November 2020.
