Please join the German Marshall Fund’s Frontlines of Democracy Initiative, GMF’s Balkans Trust for Democracy, and GMF’s Ankara Office for a timely virtual briefing with U.S. State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary Matthew Palmer focused on United States engagement in the Western Balkans, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, and the Aegean region. DAS Palmer also serves as the U.S. Special Representative for the Western Balkans. The briefing with DAS Palmer will focus on current political, economic, and security challenges in the Western Balkans and Aegean Region to support partners, including NATO allies, in these regions as they grapple with the immediate and long-term challenges and fallout of the coronavirus. The U.S. State Department, USAID, and other parts of the U.S. government continue to respond to the ongoing threat of the coronavirus while also maintaining a focus on bilateral and regional challenges. We look forward to a conversation with DAS Palmer that will touch on U.S. interests and continued effort to provide support and engage partners during the pandemic crisis. The briefing is also an opportunity to better understand U.S. policy in these regions that face significant new and existing challenges that are impacting local, national, and transatlantic dynamics, including political economic and security relations with Washington, NATO, and the European Union.
