With recent advances in machine learning and robotics, speculation about the impacts of artificial intelligence has moved from the realm of science fiction to reality. While many expect these technological advancements to improve overall economic productivity and enable innovation, fears abound about how A.I. might disrupt labor markets, exacerbate inequality, and impact democratic institutions and political legitimacy. During this roundtable, GMF Fellow Michel Servoz will present his report to the European Commission, The Future of Work? The Work of the Future!, discussing findings of the potential short and long term economic impacts of A.I., the ways in which disruptions to the labor market could impact social divisions and institutional trust, the implications for education and skill development, and policy solutions currently debated in the U.S. and Europe. This roundtable is the next in a series run by the Digital Innovation & Democracy Initiative. The initiative leverages GMF’s extensive networks to develop strategies that advance innovation and strengthen democratic values.
