  • Derek Chollet, Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor for Security and Defense Policy, The German Marshall Fund of the United States

As part of its Future of American Power series, The German Marshall Fund of the United States is pleased to invite you to a conversation with Georgetown University professor and Brookings non-resident senior fellow, Angela Stent, to discuss her new book Putin’s World: Russia Against the West and with the Rest. Tracing the last two decades of Russia’s relations with the West, the book unpacks President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions to bring his country back to the global stage as a great power. Against this backdrop, it explores the challenge the Kremlin poses to the United States and its allies.

The conversation, which will be moderated by GMF Executive Vice President Derek Chollet, will assess how Russia’s history has influenced both Putin’s perceptions and expectations of the country’s role in the world among the population at large. Moreover, it will explore how the United States and its allies can counter Russian revanchism and break Cold War thinking.

GMF’s Future of American Power series discusses new books focusing on U.S. power in the world. In line with GMF's mission to strengthen transatlantic relations, these conversations specifically focus on the implications of U.S. foreign policy for its European partners, as well as other key regions for the transatlantic relationship.
