The book recounts the story of one of America's most famous diplomats and his role in the successes and failures of U.S. foreign policy during the 20th century. This discussion will trace how war in Vietnam and peace at Dayton shaped Holbrooke and his ill-fated effort to end the war in Afghanistan. GMF Executive Vice President Derek Chollet will moderate this book talk about Holbrooke, his unique mix of ambition and idealism, and what the future holds for U.S. diplomacy.
GMF’s Future of American Power series discusses new books focusing on U.S. power in the world. In line with GMF's mission to strengthen transatlantic relations, these conversations specifically focus on the implications of U.S. foreign policy for its European partners, as well as other key regions for the transatlantic relationship.
