NATO at 70

In the aftermath of World War II with pressure from the Soviet Union rising, the United States, under the direction of President Harry S. Truman, forged an alliance with 11 western nations to form the Northern Atlantic Treaty Organization — NATO — in an effort to safeguard freedom by promoting stability and security in the North Atlantic region. 70 years after that initial pact, the original 12 nations have now become 29, and NATO’s role in the post-Cold War era continues to evolve.

Please join us for a public program in honor of the 70th anniversary of NATO featuring a panel discussion on the alliance’s history and continued role in the 21st century. This event, presented in partnership with the German Marshall Fund, will be moderated by Derek Chollet, the Fund’s executive vice president, formerly assistant secretary of defense and senior advisor to President Barack Obama. Joining Chollet on stage will be a panel featuring Albania’s Ambassador to the U.S. Floreta Faber, Senior Fellow and Director of the Future of Geopolitics Program at the German Marshall Fund Jamie Fly, CEO of the Center for a New American Security Richard Fontaine, and Poland’s Ambassador to the U.S. Piotr Wilczek.

This event is free to attend, but RSVPs are requested. The program will be preceeded by a 6:00 p.m. reception.
