Despite its global reach, the severity of the coronavirus pandemic – and the timeline of its impact – has differed from region to region, even within Europe and its neighborhood. Uncertainty remains one of the few common denominators as countries navigate through the crisis. This creates challenges as countries think about next steps.

France, which is among the five countries with the highest number of reported coronavirus cases worldwide, is slowly easing lockdown measures. The country's leadership is hoping that a calibrated approach, considering regional realities and daily developments, will prevent a new flare-up. Turkey is not far behind France when it comes to total reported cases, but it has taken a different route. It avoided a complete lockdown, only imposing weekend curfews – an approach that has received some criticism. Despite Romania's significantly lower case load, the country's health minister has ruled out easing local stay-at-home measures before mid-May to June. Officials fear that Romania's large diaspora abroad could put the country at risk of becoming a hot spot in the future.

To learn more about these developments, please join us for a conversation with German Marshall Fund experts to discuss the current situation in France, Romania, and Turkey.

Due to concerns about the coronavirus and in order to enable a wider audience to participate in this discussion, we invite you to join us via webinar. Please register to join the conversation and take part in the Q&A with the panelists.
