As part of the Future of American Power series, The German Marshall Fund of the United States is pleased to invite you to a conversation with Hal Brands and Charles Edel to discuss their new book The Lessons of Tragedy: Statecraft and World Order. Utilizing an ancient Greek approach to history – a view that sees decline as normal and order as an exception – Brands and Edel argue that Americans have grown complacent and mistakenly underappreciated that U.S. global leadership must be buttressed by international institutions that preserve the peace. The conversation, moderated by GMF Executive Vice President Derek Chollet, will discuss the authors’ thoughts on how America can regain its appreciation of tragedy and save itself from what history suggests is an inevitable slide into chaos.
