A Book Conversation with Amb. Norman Eisen

Speaker

  • Amb. Norman Eisen, Senior Fellow in Governance Studies, Brookings Institution

Moderator

  • Derek Chollet, Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor for Security and Defense Policy, The German Marshall Fund of the United States

As part of the Future of American Power series, The German Marshall Fund of the United States is pleased to invite you to a conversation with Ambassador Norman Eisen to discuss his new book The Last Palace: Europe’s Turbulent Century in Five Lives and One Legendary House. Ambassador Eisen tells the story of Europe’s transformation over the past century through glimpses into the lives of previous occupants of what is now the U.S. ambassadorial residence in Prague. These include the palace’s Jewish builder, a Nazi general, the first U.S. ambassador after World War II, a movie star turned U.S. ambassador, and Eisen’s own mother, a Czech Holocaust survivor.

The book talk, which will be moderated by GMF Executive Vice President Derek Chollet, will discuss Europe’s struggle for democracy throughout the 20th century and examine how U.S. support of the international liberal order impacted and altered Europe’s course.

GMF’s Future of American Power series discusses new books focusing on U.S. power in the world. In line with GMF's mission to strengthen transatlantic relations, these conversations specifically focus on the implications of U.S. foreign policy for its European partners, as well as other key regions for the transatlantic relationship.
