A Book Conversation with Prof. Dr. Michael Hüther The German Marshall Fund of the United States is pleased to invite you to a conversation with Prof. Dr. Michael Hüther to discuss the book he has co-authored, Exhausted Globalization: Between the Transatlantic Orientation and the Chinese Way. The book discusses the arc of globalization from its infancy to its current, complex state, which it argues, is characterized by exhaustion, given the backlash of protectionists and populists from the left and right. Looking at the root causes of this crisis, they point to institutional failings and contrasting visions between the West and China. To solve globalization’s predicament, they call for an inclusive and consensus-driven international order that better benefits economies across the globe. 

This book talk will be moderated by GMF Non-Resident Senior Fellow Prof. Minxin Pei and will discuss how the post-World War II order and its "rules-of-the-road" clash with this more inclusive vision. Moreover, it will examine whether China, Europe, and the United States can work together to create a basis of shared interests or whether the current clashes reflect deeper divisions that are set to continue.
