In recent years, relations between Turkey and the EU have been characterized by successive crises. Tensions over the rule of law, migration, and energy drillings have led to a rethink of EU-Turkey cooperation. In the summer of 2020, following Turkey’s persistent drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, these crises turned into threats of sanctions and a deadline to put an end to these activities by March of 2021. Yet recently Ankara has been demonstrating a readiness to promote a genuine partnership and a normalization of its relations with the EU. Erdoğan has even declared that he is ready to put the EU-Turkey relations "back on track" and to "turn a new page.”
