As foreign actors continue to target U.S. political systems through cyberattacks and influence operations, threats to democratic institutions and national security remain at large. This is increasingly important as the November 2018 midterm elections near. Now, more than ever, policymakers must understand the evolving toolkit of authoritarian regimes and the vulnerabilities these actors seek to exploit, in order to combat future threats.

On September 7, 2018, the Alliance for Securing Democracy (ASD) and Congressional Affairs at the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) hosted a briefing to discuss strategies outlined in “The Policy Blueprint for Countering Authoritarian Interference in Democracies” published by ASD. ASD members Laura Rosenberger, Jamie Fly, and David Salvo led the briefing with proposed recommendations for policymakers and members of civil society to defend against and deter the interference of authoritarian regimes on U.S. democracy.
