Moldova's Voting Voices: What Election Results Will Mean for the Transnistria Issue

George Balan, director for the Bureau for Integration of the Republic of Moldova, spoke to GMF to explain how the results of the elections will affect the country’s integration talks with Transnistria. Balan analyzes the similarities and differences between Ukraine and Crimea and Moldova and Transnistria, noting that one key difference is that the international community does not recognize Transnistria, a breakaway region on the country’s eastern border, and as a result outside players respect the territorial integrity of this region of Moldova - unlike in Crimea.

Balan also commented on how the election results might impact integration talks between Moldova and Transnistria, and said they are trying to negotiate a resolution quickly to re-establish control over the territory, while ensuring that the rights of all citizens are protected, including those in Transnistria. He also noted that over half the nation is supportive of the European integration perspective.

Elections in Moldova took place on November 30, 2014. GMF organized a study tour for officials and journalists to learn more about the political and economic landscape of the country.
