Why We Must Defend Liberal Democracy in the Face of Populism
Editor's Note: In a radio interview with Marion Cotta of Bremen Zwei, GMF's Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff presents themes from his new book, "The World Needs the West." This interview was conducted in German.
According to Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff the last 30 years (after 1989) the West had a too optimistic, triumphalist view on the future thinking everyone else would eventually imitate the West and turn to liberal democracy. This was not the case. Also, the USA’s era of being the hegemonic superpower is over. We are currently facing a multi-world order in which different actors, different world orders and systems of government compete. The response to that is “robust liberalism.”
