‘Alliance Revitalized’ NATO Summit Think Tank Consortium

Aggressive postures taken by Russia in Europe’s East and the spill-over of a transitional conflict in the Levant have reverberated throughout the Mediterranean to the core of Europe. Addressing these issues in a holistic manner will remain essential for the NATO Allies. To follow on a project in 2008 called ‘Alliance Reborn,’ GMF joined a consortium of 5 think tanks to inform the priorities of the 2016 NATO Summit in Warsaw. Partners of this consortium will include SAIS’ Center for Transatlantic Relations (CTR), the Atlantic Council, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), and the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF). The consortium will conduct a series of discussions and events in Washington, DC in the fall and winter of 2015. These conversations will focus on specific challenges currently facing the Alliance, with the conclusion of these efforts producing a non-partisan, independent report, which will be rolled out in 2016. 

GMF’s role in this consortium was to partner with CNAS in hosting a conference titled, “The Road to the Warsaw NATO Summit: Looking at Challenges to Europe’s South.” The half-day conference brought together a group of experts from think-tanks, the government, the Washington diplomatic community, and academia to engage in conversations on NATO’s South and consider whether NATO is ready and able to deal with the challenges emanating from the Middle East and North Africa.
