GMF’s Mediterranean Strategy Group (MSG) is the leading transatlantic dialogue on Mediterranean affairs and a core activity for GMF South. The forum brings together senior European and U.S. representatives from government, the media, business, and academia with some of the top strategic thinkers from both sides of the Mediterranean. The MSG meets on a bi-annual basis for highly interactive conversation on a wide spectrum of economic, foreign policy, and security issues.

The MSG was established in in 2009 and has built a loyal following among participants with a keen interest in this strategically important area, with the regular addition of individuals from new sectors and with new expertise. The MSG is organized with the support of a number of partners, including the Compagnia di San Paolo and the Policy Center for the New South, the Philon Fund for the Transatlantic Partnership, the Leonardo Med-Or Foundation, and numerous local event partners.

Over the past decade, we have addressed a wide range of critical topics in a Mediterranean and transatlantic setting. Our themes have ranged from security, geopolitics and NATO strategy to Mediterranean finance, from environment and the blue economy to energy, maritime commerce and the digital development of the region. The most recent edition of the MSG addressed the East-South nexus in the Mediterranean in light of the war in Ukraine. Our meeting venues have included Washington, Genoa, Turin, Rome, Naples, Palermo, Lisbon, Barcelona and Rabat.
